What is an Ooni pizza stone?

Pizza stones are a great option if you want to make restaurant-quality pizza at home in a hot oven. A hot pizza stone is able to hold high temperatures that will cook pizza quickly, resulting in a crispy, airy, and delicious crust!

Ooni is a brand that makes wood-fired and gas-powered pizza ovens. If you don't  own an Ooni pizza oven, you can also purchase a pizza stone separately for use in your own domestic oven.

Ooni pizza stones are made from cordierite, a material that holds up very well in extreme temperatures. While these stones are extremely durable, it is important to clean them correctly to assure they maintain their quality for a long time.

    Cleaning an ooni pizza stone

After you've finished baking your pizza, you may find that your Ooni stone has remnants of excess flour, crust, or other food particles. This can detract from the look of your ooni baking stone and result in burnt bits that you'll want to remove before attempting to make another pizza.

Luckily, there are some helpful tricks that can assist you in this process. Whether you own an Ooni or not, these tips apply to cleaning all ceramic pizza stones.

You may find that you have some stubborn pieces of dough or cheese on your pizza stone. The best way to make this food residue easier to remove, is to bake the stone clean.

This requires that you set your oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing the stone to heat up with the preheating oven, then bake for one hour.

The high heat will dry out any food debris. It can now be easily scraped off. Repeat this process on a regular basis after using your pizza stone to get perfect pizzas every time you cook.

Tools for a clean pizza stone

There are a few essential tools that can help you with cleaning your pizza stone. The Ooni pizza oven brush is one of the best cleaning tools for cleaning your pizza stone.

It consists of a scraper on one side, which is helpful for loosening stuck pieces of food . Flip it over and you have a stainless steel brush that is perfect for removing crumbs or flour.

If you already own a good brush or scraper tool, you can use that to clean your stone. A plastic spatula will also work if you do not want to purchase any additional cleaning equipment.

How to remove stains from an ooni pizza stone

While it is fairly simple to clean off burnt food and flour from your pizza stone, stubborn stains from tomato sauce or oil can be a bit more difficult.

It is not necessary to clean stains from your Ooni pizza stone as they do not detract from its effectiveness. Some pizza lovers even say that a stained pizza stone adds flavor to your pizza!

But if you are still determined to remove pizza stone stains, there are a few steps you can take.

Baking soda is a household staple that serves a variety of purposes, and it is a great way to help  get grease stains out of your pizza stone. Be sure to allow the hot stone to cool completely to room temperature before proceeding.

The first thing to do is mix a small amount of baking soda, about 1 tablespoon, with a bit of water until it forms a paste. Cover the stain with the paste, then use a damp rag or sponge to gently scrub in a circular motion. A paper towel is not recommended here.

Wipe off the baking soda paste, being careful not to get the stone too damp. Too much moisture on the pizza stone may damage the stone and is not recommended. For best results, let the pizza stone dry completely before use.

Can an ooni pizza stone be washed?

The most important thing to remember is to use as little water as possible when cleaning your Ooni pizza stone.

Never submerge the stone and water and do not put it in the dishwasher. The stone is made of a porous material and water can deteriorate its quality and cause it to crack when exposed to heat.

Only use a damp cloth with warm water to spot treat with a good scrub, as described above.

It is also important that you do not use dish soap, detergent, or any harsh chemicals to clean your pizza stone's surface. The soap or soapy water will absorb into the porous surface of the stone and be difficult, or impossible to remove.

    FAQs

Should I oil my Ooni pizza stone?

No, it is not necessary to oil your pizza stone. The pizza stones are designed for extreme heat. The oils from the pizzas you cook will naturally build up in the stone, making for a non-stick surface.

Can I dry my pizza stone in the oven?

Do not dry your Ooni pizza stone in the oven as any trapped water can cause the stone to crack. Simply leave the stone on a drying rack for 1-2 hours until completely dry before using. Overall, it is a good idea to avoid exposing the pizza stone to excess moisture.

    Pro tips

    • Use a clean towel to wipe off any remaining debris from your pizza stone immediately after use to avoid having to deep clean it or scrap off stuck-on food residue later
    • There is a good chance that the surface of the pizza stone will get darker over time and with use. This is normal and does not mean the stone is not being properly cleaned
    • Take special care to let your clean ooni pizza stone dry out entirely before storing it to avoid trapped moisture and mold growth
