Made from pizza dough, these easy homemade breadsticks are smothered in garlic butter, Italian seasoning, and parmesan cheese then baked to a toasty golden brown. Soft-baked Garlic Breadsticks are the perfect way to use up leftover homemade pizza dough and make for a great addition to any dinner table.
I use my pizza dough recipe to make these pizza breadsticks, however, store-bought pizza dough from the grocery store or refrigerated pizza crust can easily be used instead. These breadsticks are the perfect side dish for Meatless Baked Ziti.

Ingredients & substitutions for this breadstick recipe
- Pizza dough: use your favorite pizza dough recipe. Homemade or store-bought dough can be used to make these breadsticks. I do not recommend using a pre-made pizza crust such as Boboli for this recipe
- Butter: I recommend using unsalted butter so that you can control the level of saltiness of your breadsticks
- Garlic powder
- Italian seasoning blend: find this in the spice aisle of your grocery store. If you cannot find Italian Seasoning, substitute with a blend of oregano, basil, thyme and rosemary
- Parmesan cheese: top your breadsticks with grated or shredded parmesan cheese for cheesy garlic breadsticks
- Marinara sauce: this is optional but it is perfect as a dipping sauce for your pizza sticks
How to make garlic breadsticks
Step 1
If using my Pizza Dough recipe, prepare the dough through step 2. Please note this recipe uses half the amount of dough yielded from my Chewy Pizza Dough recipe.
I would recommend making a full batch of pizza dough and dividing it in half - use half to make pizzas and half to make these breadsticks. Or, prepare half the pizza dough recipe by dividing all ingredient amounts by 2.
Pizza dough can be made overnight according to the recipe instructions or it can be made the same day. Use instant yeast instead of active dry yeast.
At the end of step 2, instead of placing the covered dough in the fridge overnight, leave the covered dough in a warm spot (approximately 80º-85ºF) for 2 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size and slowly bounces back when pressed with your fingertip.
Step 2
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Step 3
Punch the risen dough down to release the air bubbles. If the full pizza dough recipe was prepared, divide the dough in half. Use the other half of the dough to make pizza or follow the recipe instructions to freeze for another time.
Step 4
Sprinkle a clean countertop or work surface with flour. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set next to your work station (I do not recommend using a silicone baking mat for this - I like to slice my breadsticks directly on the parchment paper lined baking sheet. If you use a silicone baking mat, you will cut through it).
Step 5
Remove the prepared dough from the bowl and place on the lightly floured surface. Press the dough gently into a 8 x 10 inch rectangle until it is about ½ inch thick.
If you prefer thinner breadsticks, continue pressing the dough gently into a larger rectangle. Gently lift the dough onto the prepared baking sheet. If you prefer, press the dough into a rectangle directly onto the parchment paper to avoid having to lift and move it.
Step 6
Combine the melted butter, garlic, and Italian seasoning together in a small bowl. Brush the butter mixture liberally over the top of the breadsticks. Sprinkle evenly with Parmesan cheese.
Step 7
Bake in the preheated oven for 14-16 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. If desired, turn the oven to broil for the last minute to brown the top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool 15 minutes.
Step 8
Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to slice into breadsticks. Serve plain or with marinara sauce for dipping.
